Italian for Translators and Interpreters

At Sapientia Language Institute, we believe that language is a gateway to opportunity — especially for those called to work between cultures, institutions, and communities. Our full-time programme Italian for Translators and Interpreters has been created to meet a growing national need: Sri Lanka requires professionally trained Italian–Sinhala and Italian–English language specialists who can support migration processes, legal documentation, tourism, cultural collaboration, and international communication between Sri Lanka and Italy.

This course is the first of its kind in the country, offering a structured, intensive pathway that takes learners from foundational skills up to CEFR Level C1, the highest level of linguistic mastery. Guided by a qualified native Italian instructor, the programme combines advanced language acquisition with specialized training in translation techniques, consecutive and simultaneous interpretation, document handling, cultural mediation, and professional ethics.

With Italy playing an increasingly important role in the lives of thousands of Sri Lankans — from workers and families to students, businesses, and institutions — the demand for competent translators and interpreters is higher than ever. Yet Sri Lanka currently lacks formally trained professionals in this field. This programme is designed to bridge that gap.

The following pages outline the structure, objectives, and professional outcomes of the Italian for Translators and Interpreters course. It is not just a language programme: it is a direct pathway to a meaningful and high-demand career, empowering learners to serve communities, support national institutions, and connect Sri Lanka and Italy with accuracy, integrity, and cultural understanding.

Pathway to Appointment as a Sworn Translator in Sri Lanka

A key professional route available to graduates is the opportunity to become a Sworn Translator, formally appointed by the Ministry of Justice and National Integration (MOJ). Sworn Translators are authorized to translate documents submitted to, or required by, judicial, governmental, diplomatic, and administrative bodies.

According to the requirements published by the Ministry of Justice, the process typically involves:
  1. Application to the Ministry of Justice under the category “Sworn Translator – Foreign Languages.”
  2. Evaluation through a written examination and/or selection board, which assesses the candidate’s competence in translating between Italian and the designated local language(s) (Sinhala/Tamil/English).
  3. Verification of qualifications and language proficiency, including demonstrated ability to translate legal, administrative, and official documents accurately.
  4. Appointment and inclusion in the Register of Sworn Translators maintained and periodically updated by the Ministry of Justice.

Official announcements, examinations, and the updated list of registered Sworn Translators are periodically published on the Ministry of Justice website.
